This panel will discuss providing access and facilitating access to Statistics Canada data along the continuum of data access.
The panel will have representatives from the DLI Community, <odesi>, researchers, Real Time Remote Access system (RTRA), Virtual Data Lab (vDL), and the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN).

Advantages and disadvantages of Public Use Microdata Files (PUMF)
This presentation is from a social scientist who makes extensive use of Statistics Canada’s microdata files, including those made available through the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI). The objective is 1) to present the reasons why the researcher uses DLI data; 2) to illustrate the usefulness of such data for research; and 3) to identify the main advantages and disadvantages of such data for research. ODESI: Reflecting on 10 years of collaboration in library data services
Over the past 10 years, ODESI has provided shared library infrastructure for the delivery of licensed government microdata and Canadian public opinion polls for use in academic research and teaching. Through the inclusion of more open and historical data collaborations, ODESI as an evolving service, supports library-curated national data collections for open reuse in Canada. Real Time Remote Access
The RTRA system is an on-line remote access facility allowing users to run SAS programs, in real-time, against microdata located in a central and secure location. Download session slides.
Virtual Data Lab
The Virtual Data Lab (vDL) is a new mode on the continuum of access that builds on the foundation of the Research Data Centres (RDCs) and the Canadian Centre for Data Development and Economic Research (CDER). In its end state, the vDL will provide remote access to detailed anonymized social and business microdata for research and analysis through a secure cloud-based interface. After Statistics Canada tested various prototypes, the project team is now launching pilots for external partners to test the vDL environment. With the lessons learned from these pilots, the team will continue to improve the environment until its launch in 2021. Download session slides.
The Research Data Centres & Centre for Data Development and Economic Research
The presentation will go over the CDER and RDC programs (The DLI environments where masterfiles for business and household data are accessed) including how to access them, and some of the benefits of access to master files compared to the other elements of the continuum of access.
